Irish Setter dogs originate from the Emerald Isle and were developed in Ireland to aid in the bird-hunting process. This breed has a keen sense of smell and was utilized by bird hunters to detect birds as well as retrieve the catch after the hunters struck their game. Hunters needed a dog that could move fast across open terrain, as Ireland is known for, as well as a dog who is attentive and assertive.
Breeders were on a mission to get the right dog breed for the job they had at hand and cross-breeding led to what we now know as the Irish Setter. They appeared in the 19th century and were among the first breeds to be AKC-recognized in 1878. As the years went by, the Irish Setter became a great companion and hunting dog in the United States.
